It’s a Cold Business
Baseball is a cold, cold business. The Giants designed 27 year old left-hander Pat Misch for assignment in order to place 23 year old Kelvin Pichardo on the 40-man roster now that Pichardo is coming off a 50-game drug suspension.
Misch is a good guy, but he hasn’t produced at the major league level. He’s got a career 0-7 with a 5.20 ERA. Meanwhile, Pichardo is a cheater, but he’s got a better chance to help the Giants in the future. He had 2.48 ERA in AA Connecticut with 62 K’s in 61.2 innings.
You know what? The Giants made the right move. Baseball at the professional level is about winning first, second and last. If guys like Pichardo get caught cheating, they deserve to be punished, but once they’ve done their time, so to speak, a major league organization should let bygones be bygones if they think the player can help them in the future.
Plenty of ballplayers have had moral failings, but its winning that puts fans in the seats. At the professional level, sports are businesses, and anyone who forgets that is asking for let-down.
