How to Throw the Eephus Pitch

Here’s a video clip showing Kazuhito Tadano throwing an absolutely beautiful eephus pitch to Mauro Gomez in an NPB game today.  It completely fooled Gomez, who let it go by, but the umpire didn’t give Tadano the call.  It also fooled the camera man who doesn’t capture the full flight of the lob.

One of the big problems with throwing the eephus pitch is that it is extremely hard to get into the strike zone, particularly if the pitcher is trying to throw it with a motion than does not telegraph the pitch is coming until the last second; and even when it does come down into the zone, umpires often don’t call it a strike.  The Nippon Ham Fighters catcher framed the pitch as long as possible, but still no dice from the man in blue.
