San Francisco Giants Sign Cuban Outfielder Daniel Carbonell

The Giants today signed 23 year old Cuban defector Daniel Carbonell to a four-year, $3.2 million contract with another $3.5 million in performance bonuses.  Carbonell must not be all that highly regarded if that’s all he got at his age.

Carbonell played four years in Cuba’s Serie Nacional, batting batting .287 (163-for-568) with 119 runs scored, 28 doubles, four triples, nine home runs and 70 RBI in 190 games.  In his last season there (2012-2013) he hit .298 with more power than his career average.

He plays all three outfield positions, but mostly center field, and I would guess he’s fast and will take a walk based on his ratio of runs scored to at bats.  Baseball America’s Ben Badler praises his speed and athleticism, but reports that there are concerns about his swing.  Reports are that Carbonell is expected to start his American career at A+ San Jose with the hope that he can move quickly up to AA.
