Kevin Correia and Robert Coello Opt Out of Their Minor League Deals

The AAA Sacramento River Cats’ two top starters so far in 2015, Kevin Correia and Robert Coello, have both opted out of their minor league deals as of June 1st.  Reliever Juan Gutierrez could also opt out today, although his 4.94 ERA at the AAA level doesn’t make an opt out as likely.

Coello has a 3.50 ERA after 11 starts, and Correia has a 3.58 ERA after six starts.  Neither is guaranteed to get a major league job as a result of their opt outs, but there are probably better situations for them somewhere other than the Giants’ organization, which is going to have a surplus of starters at the major league level when Matt Cain and Jake Peavy return in the near future.

If nothing else, the departure of Correia and Coello should result in a string of promotions through the Giants’ system.  The most likely candidates for promotion to AAA from AA Richmond are starters Joe Biagini and Chris Stratton.  Biagini doesn’t strike me as a great prospect, but with a 1.53 ERA after eight 2015 starts, he’s certainly pitched well enough to deserve a promotion.  Kyle Crick has an ERA less than half of Stratton’s, but I think Crick is better served remaining at AA given his obvious command problems (26 walks in 35.1 innings pitched so far this year).  Stratton’s command isn’t great either, but it’s better than Crick’s, and as a former 1st round pick out of a major college program, it’s certainly not a bad idea to push him up at age 24 if there’s an opening at AAA.

The Class A+ San Jose Giants pitchers most likely to move up to AA Richmond are starters Tyler Beede and Chase Johnson and closer Dan Slania.  My guess is that Beede and Slania are the ones most likely to be promoted if Richmond needs two pitchers to replace the two that may well be promoted to AAA Sacramento.

Beede is last year’s first round draft pick who has a 2.24 ERA after nine starts and struck out 11 in his last outing.  He looks like he’s ready for a promotion if a roster spot opens up.  Slania has an ERA under 2.00 with 33 Ks against only six walks in 23.1 IP, so he certainly looks ready for the big jump to AA ball.

Jose Reyes and Raymundo Montero are the two pitchers at Class A Augusta most deserving of a promotion to A+ San Jose at this moment.  Both have ERAs below 1.50 with excellent ratios.

Juan Gutierrez has opted out of his contract too. No word yet as to who the Giants will promote, if anyone. Meanwhile, the Giants signed Kevin Frandsen to a minor league deal after his release from the Diamondbacks’ AAA club, and the Giants have also re-signed Erik Cordier after being forced to designate him for assignment in order to drop him from the 40-man roster.

The SF Chronicle today reports that Chris Stratton and Jack Snodgrass have been promoted to AAA Sacramento, and Tyler Beede has been promoted to AA Richmond. Snodgrass is an extreme ground ball pitcher, and the Giants may want to see what he can do with better defense behind him as he moves to AAA. However, he’s two years older than Biagini, who had pitched better at AA Richmond this year.
