San Francisco Giants Promote Derek Law

With Sergio Romo to the disabled list, the Giants called up Derek Law.  I’m not particularly surprised.

Law pitched well in three appearances with the AAA Sacramento River Cats, not allowing a run in three innings pitched.  The Giants think he’s all the way back from Tommy John surgery, before which he was a top bullpen prospect, striking out 102 batters in 66.1 innings pitched, in a season mainly split between Class A Augusta and A+ San Jose.

The Giants had a couple of other pitchers pitching well at Sacramento,  Vin Mazzaro (age 29) and Braulio Lara (27), but the team obviously sees the 25 year old as still a crucial future bullpen piece if they can develop him.

Law will certainly get his opportunities from Bruce Bochy before the Giants send him down again, so this is his moment to show what he has.  If he falters, then perhaps Mazzaro or Lara gets his shot.

Mac Williamson, who certainly deserved to make the team out of Spring Training, is batting .276 with an .852 OPS, albeit after only seven games.  The Giants likely figure he still needs regular AAA at-bats before they call him up.

Mac Williamson has indeed made the team, as Ehire Adrianza was also placed on the DL with a broken foot today.

  2. Burly Says:

Tremendous first MLB performance by Derek Law. He struck out three of the four batters he faced in his one inning of work.
